RenaissanceRe was established in Bermuda in 1993 to write property catastrophe reinsurance. A publicly traded company since July 1995, RenaissanceRe is traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol ‘RNR’.
The Company’s business consists of three segments:
- Reinsurance, which includes catastrophe reinsurance, specialty reinsurance and certain property catastrophe and specialty joint ventures managed by the Company’s ventures unit,
- Lloyd’s, which includes reinsurance and insurance business written through Syndicate 1458, and
- Insurance, written by RenaissanceRe Syndicate 1458 and RenaissanceRe Specialty Risks Ltd.

DaVinci Re provides property catastrophe reinsurance against natural and man-made disasters and specialty reinsurance for certain other risks, primarily in areas where it can take advantage of RenaissanceRe’s catastrophe reinsurance expertise.
DaVinciRe Holdings Ltd. and its operating subsidiary DaVinci are managed by Renaissance Underwriting Managers, Ltd. (RUM), a part of the Ventures group of RenaissanceRe. With over $1 billion of capital, DaVinci’s excellent financial strength is reflected in its “A” rating by A.M. Best and “AA-” rating by Standard & Poor’s.
RenaissanceRe Specialty Risks Ltd. (Formerly Glencoe Insurance Ltd. is 100% owned and managed by RenaissanceRe Holdings Ltd. Formed in 1996, RenaissanceRe Specialty Risks Ltd. is a Bermuda-domiciled, Class 3A insurance company, eligible to write business on an excess and surplus lines basis in 49 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. RenaissanceRe Specialty Risks Ltd. offers a broad array of solutions to clients, both on an excess of loss and proportional basis, and its business mix varies over time based on clients’ needs.
Top Layer Re was founded in 1999 to underwrite reinsurance and retrocessional reinsurance for very high layers of catastrophe programs on a world-wide basis (excluding the U.S., and Caribbean windstorm). These layers are generally higher than those written by Renaissance Reinsurance. Top Layer offers innovative, custom-designed products and programs backed by outstanding financial security and strong claims-paying ability.
Top Layer Re is a joint venture owned 50% by Renaissance Reinsurance Ltd. and 50% by State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company. Top Layer Re’s business is exclusively managed and underwritten by Renaissance Underwriting Managers, Ltd.Top Layer Re is rated “AA” and “A+” by Standard and Poor’s and A.M. Best.
Based in Dublin, Renaissance Reinsurance of Europe is a fully capitalized reinsurance company formed in 1998. The Company is regulated by the Central Bank of Ireland.
The Dublin office also serves as a risk modeling and software development base for the RenaissanceRe group of companies.
RenaissanceRe Syndicate 1458 was established in April 2009, with property and specialty business underwritten from June 1, 2009. RenaissanceRe Syndicate 1458 enables the Company to execute across the diverse range of markets available through Lloyd’s of London, to respond more effectively to the needs of both U.S. and international customers.
RenaissanceRe Underwriting Managers U.S. LLC launched in July 2013 and provides specialty treaty reinsurance solutions on both a quota share and excess of loss basis, with initial classes of business to include professional liability, general casualty and other specialty lines.
RenaissanceRe Specialty U.S. Ltd. is an A.M. Best ‘A’ rated and Bermuda-domiciled reinsurer that was launched in June 2013 as a balance sheet for U.S.-based specialty risks written through RenaissanceRe Underwriting Managers U.S. LLC.
RenaissanceRe’s Ventures unit has responsibility for managing our property catastrophe joint ventures such as DaVinci Re and Top Layer Re, executing customized reinsurance transactions to assume or cede risk, and managing certain investments directed at classes of risk other than catastrophe reinsurance. We also provide customized weather and energy risk management solutions to various customers on a worldwide basis.
Renaissance Underwriting Managers, Ltd. (“RUM”), part of our Ventures group, acts as an underwriting manager for our joint ventures. In addition, RUM supports the RenaissanceRe organization by providing structured reinsurance solutions.
RUM also provides management services to strategic partners by acting as an underwriting agent, providing consulting services or acting as a principal representative.The company focuses on:
