Ventures

In addition to RenaissanceRe’s reinsurance and insurance businesses, we also leverage our expertise and experience through joint ventures and other strategic relationships. These are structured and managed by our Ventures unit.

Our three principal business activities in this area are:

1. Property Catastrophe Managed Joint Ventures
   We actively manage property catastrophe-oriented joint ventures, principally including Top Layer Re and DaVinci Re, both companies with their own standalone balance sheets and ratings and managed by RenaissanceRe under long-term arrangements. We also structure and manage other, smaller joint ventures related to specific market opportunities.
    
2. Customized Reinsurance Transactions
   We have also offered products through which we cede participations in the performance of our catastrophe reinsurance portfolio. We believe our products contain a number of customized features designed to fit the needs of our partners, as well as our risk management objectives. These tailored transactions have also included participation in the market for catastrophe-linked securities.
    
3. Business Development Joint Ventures and Other Investments:
   To capitalize on opportunities outside of RenaissanceRe ’s core expertise, rather than assuming exclusive management responsibilities ourselves, we sometimes structure new ventures in partnership with other market participants. Examples of this are our investments in ChannelRe and PlatinumRe, each of which has its own management team. For RenaissanceRe, these types of transactions are typically directed at non-catastrophe and sometimes non-insurance classes of risk.
